Let’s talk about some ways to say no to negativity and change your mindset so that you can find success in your home based business.

Whether you believe it or not, human beings are naturally negative. That’s right my friend, most people are Debbie Downers at their core.

It’s not really our fault though. It’s because our brains have a “negativity bias” –  that means it’s simply built with a greater sensitivity to unpleasant news. The bias is so automatic that it can be detected at the earliest stage of the brain’s information processing.

Take, for example, the studies done by John Cacioppo, Ph.D., when he was at Ohio State University. He showed people pictures known to bring about positive feelings (for example, a Ferrari, or a pizza), those certain to stir up negative feelings (a mutilated face or dead cat) and those known to produce neutral feelings (a plate, a hairdryer). Meanwhile, he recorded electrical activity in the brain’s cerebral cortex that reflects the magnitude of information processing taking place.

The brain, Cacioppo demonstrated, reacts more strongly to stimuli it deems as negative. There is a greater surge in electrical activity. That’s right. His testing discovered our attitudes are more heavily influenced by downbeat news than good news.

The problem with negativity is that it ends up limiting our accomplishments and ability to create greatness in our lives. In order to change your mindset, you have to begin saying no to negativity and seeking out positivity. Here are four ways you can start to say no to negativity and change your mindset.

Set Reasonable Goals

Many people who focus on the negative side of life, tend to put themselves down because they set huge goals that are almost impossible to achieve. When you set smaller, more reasonable goals, you have a better chance of being successful in achieving them, motivating you to reach the next one.

For example if you have the goal of writing a blog and you put down “write a blog by Monday” as your goal, you are more than likely going to be disappointed. If you instead take that monumental task and break it down bit by bit into smaller challenges you can accomplish overtime, you will have more success and more positive outcomes along the way.

Turn Problems into Opportunities

Words are potent. If you often find yourself negatively describing your life, try creating a list of all the negative words you use throughout the day and replace them with more positive ones. For example, if you are always complaining about your problems, start to refer to them as challenges instead. Not to go too far into psychology again (one of my favorite topics), but your brain loves a challenge. It loves games. Challenges and games are fun! Your brain does not love problems.

I have the habit of saying this affirmation to myself many times daily. “Everything works in my favor.” I find the more I say it, the more it is true. When I am stuck in traffic I say it. When I am on the phone with an irrational service representative for some store or service. I say it when I am running late. I say it when the computer or iphone malfunction. I have found it to be true on so many occasions that everything really can work in my favor if I allow it to be true.

Wake Up on the Right Side of the Bed

What do you do when you first wake up? Do you grab your phone? Do you start worrying about your day? Do you complain your kids kept you up all night? I have been guilty of all of these things! And you know what, when I start my day this way it ends up being a crap day. How about you?

To get rid of this negativity, begin your day by asking yourself the following three questions.

* What am I excited about today?
* Who can I encourage or serve today?
* What am I grateful for?

Taking the time to think about all that you have and all that you are excited about will completely change your outlook for the entire day. The tone of your morning sets the tone of your day. Change Your Default Answer

People who are naturally negative tend to use no as their first response to anything new. This is done in part to allow them the time to think about it before making a decision. Unfortunately, they end up defending their original no decision, even though it may not be what they really want. To get out of this robotic natural no response, try saying “I’m not sure. Let me think about it.” Then try to find a reason to say yes, rather than no. When you say no, like usually stays the same. When you say yes, new opportunities are often opened.
